To open the Printers and Faxes folder, open the Printers and Faxes icon in the Control Panel. You may also be able to find this item on the main Start button menu panel thing. Either way, the Printers and Faxes folder you see looks similar to Figure 14-3.

You can do several things in the Printers and Faxes folder as far as troubleshooting is concerned:

Click the Troubleshoot printing link to run a Windows troubleshooter for your printer. This item is found in the See Also task pane, on the left side of the Printers and Faxes window.

Open your printer’s Properties dialog box: Right-click your printer’s icon and choose Properties from the pop-up menu. This method is good for adjusting and tweaking the printer. You can also print a test page from the dialog box.

Instantly halt printing by right-clicking your printer icon and choosing Pause Printing from the pop-up menu. See the section “Halting a printer run amok,” later in this chapter, for more information.

Delete and reinstall a printer: Click to select an icon and then choose File➪Delete from the menu. That command removes the printer. You can then use item labeled Add a Printer Task to reinstall that same printer. Often times, this technique fixes printer driver problems.

Choose which printer you want to use as your main, or default, printer.

Just click the printer to select it and choose File➪Set as Default Printer from the menu. The default printer has a white-on-black check mark by its icon, as shown in Figure 14-3.
